British Retail Consortium has developed and presented the Food Technical Standards, to be used in the evaluation of the manufacturers of the branded products. It is designed to aid retailers and brand holders to produce food products with a certain quality and safety, and help them not to be victim of abuse by the appropriate authorities. Under European law for Food, retailers and brand holders have legal responsibility for their brands. BRC is considered as the benchmark for the best practices in the food industry. Using this standard outside the United Kingdom helped its development as a Global Standard, used not only in assessing retail suppliers, but also as a benchmark where many companies have based their evaluation for the programs of supply and production of products with brand. BRC Global Standards is a leading safety and quality certification programme, used by over 23,000 certificated suppliers in 123 countries.
